big debate playing out in washington over the obama administration's efforts to overhaul the nation's gun laws. we heard some of that this morning. here is the president addressing this issue during a white house news conference, we mentioned, moments ago. >> what you can count on is that the things that i've said in the past, the belief that we have to have stronger background checks, that we could do a much better job in terms of keeping these magazine clips with high capacity out of the hands of folks who shouldn't have them, an assault weapons ban that's meaningful that those are things i continue to believe make sense. >> megyn: new york senator chuck schumer is going a step further than the administration. now calling on wal-mart and other retailers to suspend sales of some types of weapons that are now perfectly legal until washington can come up with a new gun control policy. requests like that may be adding to the concern from gun owners as several gun shows around the country report record turnout. in fact, the president was asked about the growing number of gun sales. he
the debt ceiling? we're approaching that. we heard from the obama administration they have no backup plan if congress does not raise the debt ceiling, and the head of the house republican conference kathy mcmorris rogers says i think it's possible we should shut down the government to make sure the president understands we're serious. what do you think of that kind of talk? >> that's a terrible statement to make. shutting down government is different. now, we've got to be clear here. there's shutting down government in a budget fight. that's one thing. that's okay you can argue about that. the debt ceiling however is messing around with the full faith and credit of the united states. it would be bad for the economy when we played that game of russian roulette back in august of 2011. you could see the economy decline. you could see job creation going away. i'm with newt gingrich on this one. newt gingrich had taken a strong position that we should not use, that the republicans should not use the debt ceiling as leverage in this cutting spending. let's use the continuing

. there is a lot of talk about the administration what they talk about taking care of the debt ceiling is obligations by congress in particular according to president obama that have been incurred so far. has anyone considered the spending going forward and how would we take care of that even if we handle the debt limit crisis we have right now? >> i think this is going to be the dominant debate in washington for the next six, eight weeks. i think there will be serious negotiations and attempt at serious negotiations to slow the rate of spending on healthcare entitlements, medicare principally, in a dollar for dollar way with increases in the debt. president says he won't make eight straight trade. he won't describe it as a straight tradeoff. he want to de-couple about future discussions entitlements. whether they can come to an agreement whether it should be described one for one trade or two different ajsz is one of the reasons for the standoff. there is going to be a serious, i think, that is unvoidable there will be another attempt at this spring to rein in some of these entitlemen
